Maternity Abroad is Now Available Worldwide – A Must-Read for Expat Moms!
Pregnancy and childbirth far from home can be challenging, but Jessica Gabrielzyk’s latest book, Maternity Abroad: Becoming a Mother in a Foreign Land, is here to provide support, guidance, and comfort to moms navigating pregnancy and early motherhood in a new country.
We sat down with Jessica to discuss her journey, the inspiration behind the book, and what readers can take away from this essential guide.
Q: Jessica, can you tell us a bit about yourself?
I’m Brazilian but I’ve lived abroad most of my life. I lived in Australia, Portugal, Ireland, and now Switzerland, where I’m raising my family. My experiences navigating life and motherhood abroad inspired me to write Maternity Abroad. I wanted to share everything I’ve learned—both the challenges and joys—about being an expat mom.
Q: What’s Maternity Abroad about?
Maternity Abroad is the book I wish I had when I was pregnant and living far from home. It’s a practical and heartfelt guide for moms-to-be and new mothers living abroad.
The book covers everything from navigating foreign healthcare systems to understanding citizenship rights for your baby, local birthing practices, and parental leave policies. It also offers insights on finding postpartum support and building a community while raising a child far from your homeland.
To make it even more impactful, I interviewed families from all over the world, gathering their unique stories and experiences. Whether you’re planning a move, adjusting to a new country, or simply curious about motherhood in a foreign land, this book is here to guide you.
Q: Who should read Maternity Abroad?
This book is for anyone navigating motherhood far from home. It’s perfect for expat moms, families considering a move abroad, and even those who are curious about cross-cultural parenting. It’s also a valuable resource for moms living away from their family or usual support systems, as it provides practical strategies and emotional support.
Q: What was the writing process like for you?
Writing Maternity Abroad was a journey in itself. I collaborated with amazing professionals to ensure the book is both accurate and relatable. I also had the privilege of interviewing families from all over the globe—Japan, Africa, Australia, Europe, North America, you name it.
These conversations reminded me how diverse, yet connected, we all are through the shared experience of motherhood. The process was both humbling and inspiring.
Q: What’s the main message you want readers to take away?
Parenting abroad is not easy, but you’re not alone. Maternity Abroad is here to remind you that there’s a global community of mothers who understand your journey.
With the right resources and support, you can navigate this path with confidence. Whether it’s finding the right prenatal care, understanding local customs, or building a support network, this book equips you to embrace the chaos and joy of motherhood abroad.
Q: Any advice for moms planning to move abroad?
Do your research, but also be open to surprises. Every country has its own way of doing things, and flexibility is key.
Most importantly, don’t hesitate to seek help—whether it’s from local communities, online expat groups, or resources like Maternity Abroad. Building a support system is essential for thriving as a parent in a new culture.
Q: Any final thoughts for our readers?
I’m thrilled to share that Maternity Abroad is now available worldwide! It’s been an incredible journey creating this book, and I hope it becomes a trusted companion for mothers around the globe.
Whether you’re preparing for your first child or adapting to life with a little one in a foreign country, this book is here to support you every step of the way. I can’t wait to hear how it helps you on your journey!
Q: Are you already working on a second book?
Yes! I’m thrilled to share that I’m currently working on my second book, Parenting Abroad: Thriving Together in a Foreign Land.
This book dives deep into the natural process of raising children abroad, exploring the challenges faced by both parents and kids. It’s a guide to help families adapt to their new lives, covering essential topics like:
• Navigating cultural differences in parenting styles
• Supporting bilingualism and language acquisition
• Adjusting to new schools and education systems
• Building a family routine that bridges both cultures
I’m also addressing critical topics for diverse families, such as how to support children in religious or cultural transitions. For example, one of the questions I tackle is, “My daughter wears a hijab—how can I help her adapt to this new environment?”
Parenting Abroad is designed to offer inclusive, practical, and heartfelt advice for every family navigating life away from home, including refugees and families of all backgrounds.
Stay tuned for updates—I can’t wait to share this new journey with you!
